Where do our methods come from?

It is crucial for our community to understand the rationale behind Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) methods as it allows us to fully appreciate their impact and facilitate meaningful engagement. By knowing the justification behind SEL, we gain a deeper understanding of the science and research supporting these practices. This knowledge enables us to advocate for the integration of SEL in educational institutions, workplaces, and community organizations. Understanding the reasoning behind SEL empowers us to make informed decisions about its implementation and ensures that we prioritize the well-being and holistic development of individuals. Furthermore, knowing the justification behind SEL methods fosters transparency and builds trust within the community, encouraging active participation and collaboration for the betterment of all.

CASEL — Research-based advocacy for SEL in schools and communities

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, is a prominent organization that advocates for and supports social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools and communities. Casel's approach to SEL is multi-faceted, focusing on equipping individuals with essential skills to lead healthy, fulfilling lives. One organization that aligns with Casel's approach and complements its efforts is "Breathe For Change," which provides specific methods to promote SEL.

Casel's approach to SEL is rooted in the belief that emotional intelligence is a vital aspect of a well-rounded education. The organization emphasizes five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. By fostering these skills in students, Casel aims to promote their overall well-being, helping them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

To achieve these outcomes, Casel provides various resources, research-backed strategies, and training programs for educators and parents. Casel recognizes that SEL is not a standalone curriculum but rather a holistic approach integrated into the school environment. By creating nurturing and inclusive spaces, fostering positive relationships, and teaching emotional regulation skills, Casel aims to provide the foundations for lifelong social and emotional well-being.

Breathe for Change — SEL methods with a focus on yoga

"Breathe For Change" is an organization that complements Casel's approach by offering specific methods and practices to enhance SEL. This organization recognizes the power of breathing and mindfulness techniques in promoting emotional regulation, reducing stress, and enhancing well-being. By integrating these practices into educational institutions, "Breathe For Change" empowers educators and students to better manage emotions and create a more positive and productive learning environment.

"Breathe For Change" offers comprehensive teacher training programs that focus on breathing exercises, mindfulness, yoga, and social-emotional intelligence practices. These programs equip educators with the tools necessary to model and teach self-care, empathy, and emotional regulation to their students. By emphasizing the importance of self-care among educators, "Breathe For Change" recognizes that the well-being of educators directly impacts students' emotional development.

Through collaboration and alignment, Casel and "Breathe For Change" provide a holistic approach to SEL. While Casel emphasizes the core competencies and integrated approach to SEL, "Breathe For Change" complements these efforts by offering targeted practices that focus on breathing, mindfulness, and self-care. By combining their efforts, these organizations contribute to the overall well-being of educators and students, nurturing a positive and empathetic school culture that prioritizes social and emotional growth.
