Our Mission
Integrating SEL and circus-arts for youths in Northern Nevada.
What are Aerial Arts?
Aerial arts is the blanket term for the set of circus disciplines which involve calisthenic skills performed on apparatuses hung above the ground. Aerialists overcome gravity as they dance and maneuver high above the ground. Inspired by disciplines like circus, gymnastics, and dance, aerial arts encompass a variety of apparatuses, including silks, hoops, ropes, and trapezes.
Why Social and Emotional Learning?
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an essential component of education, aimed at nurturing students' emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. The theory is spearheaded by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL.) By incorporating SEL into our curriculum, we believes that students can develop crucial life skills, such as empathy, resilience, and responsible decision-making. Our framework encompasses five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Through these competencies, Aerial Equanimity seeks to empower students with the tools they need to succeed academically, personally, and in their future careers.
How does Social and Emotional Learning relate to Aerial Arts?
Mindful movement refers to the intentional and aware engagement of one's body in motion, such as yoga, tai chi, or other forms of gentle movement. By combining physical activity with community and mindfulness, individuals can derive numerous benefits for their mental, emotional, and social well-being, cultivating self-awareness, building resilience, and enhancing empathy. By connecting movement with breath and intention, students develop a greater sense of self and foster healthier relationships with themselves and those around them. The inclusion of mindful movement in SEL programs empowers individuals with the tools to navigate challenges, develop self-compassion, and effectively manage their emotional responses. The integration of mindful movement into SEL practices equips individuals with invaluable skills that promote holistic well-being in an tumultuous world.
When do we get started?
Aerial Equanimity is working to improve access and representation in aerial arts for aspiring youths in Northern Nevada with a focus on Social and Emotional Learning and wellness through movement.
We believe that true mastery of the aerial arts begins from within. Our workshops and lessons seamlessly blend the physicality of aerial techniques with personal introspection and SEL exercises, allowing students to explore the depths of their artistic and personal potential.
“[Aerial Equanimity] help[s] the kids with their confidence. They help them interact and they make them feel at home. They make them feel wanted and they’re also there for them, emotionally and physically.”
